adventures in crafting!
the renegade craft fair was once again a raging success! i would have to say that the craftastic weekend was probably one of the best weekends of my life! hang on everyone, you're in for a treat!!!
SATURDAY, JUNE 17
i left the wonderful city of philadelphia bright and early with the lovely ladies of art star, erin and megan! we got to mccarren park exactly on time to unload and settle into our new quarters separately, but close enough to say hello to one another throughout the day. i was to meet my tentmate, holly from miss hawklet, for the very first time, as we agreed to share a space at this amazing handmade event. i knew her from her flickr photos which kind of gave me an idea of what she looked like. kind of. i spotted her grabbing our rental tent from the oddly placed moving van in the middle of the park! i ran up to her, introduced myself, and quickly helped her get our shelter from the van to our coveted spot amongst the ring of crafters. yes, we had a corner lot intersecting many routes in and out of the park, not to mention our totally rad neighbor, isara from polaire!!! sadly, our luck changed on sunday when our real estate was pushed back a few spots, but we were in the shade, which i guess might have been traded that day for the corner lot. anywho! so, the day was incredible! people were flying in and out of our tent, taking home lots of handmade goodies. amongst those friendly folks were:
• karen duffy aka duff, former mtv vj, who was a part of the indie craft documentary!!! she loved holly's felted sushi!!!
• the editor in chief for knit.1 magazine, adina klein, who took a few of my tough knitter tees for review in an upcoming issue!!!
• vickie howell who liked my tees!
• rena tom from rare device who is lovely!
• jess from miss chief and jen from fresh popcorn producions who are old friends from the handmade arcade!
during the fair nate came up by bus to meet me at the park with a fond friend of ours, sarah from portland who now lives in nyc. they brought me a delicious turkey and brie sammy and lots of good wishes and love. did i forget to mention how much fun i was having with holly? um, yeah, best tentmate ever!!! as the day turned into night, nate surprised holly and i with to-go margaritas from a local bar down the street. perfect. our first day went really well and it was time to rest and mentally prepare for the next day ahead.
before the end of the day, i ran into anna, a friend of mine that i used to work with in portland. i asked her if we could stay with her and her super boyfriend, jeremy, who runs the stellar record label temporary residence for the weekend. not only did we stay in probably the most spacious nyc apartment, but they made my weekend one that i will never forget by suggesting a simple, yet delicious joint right around the corner from the park.
we ate at bean in williamsburg. nothing fancy. just good mexican food with the occasional sighting of one of my most favorite musical artists!!! (you'll have to wait until the end of the story to find out. it's good. i promise.) so, we are waiting for our table while another group is waiting for their table. two available tables pop up at the same time - one inside and one outside. the waitress waited for the duel. the other group said it didn't matter and we chose inside. so, they were outside. before we took our seats, m.m.f.m.a. turned to me and said jokingly if you want, we can switch for dessert? we sat down and anna looked at me and said you know who that was, right? i was freaking out at this point and i responded with an apparent uh-uh, nope, who? she stopped my heart when she whispered sufjan stevens. i died. and could barely eat my dinner. all i could think about was dessert.

SUNDAY, JUNE 18
nate and i walked to the park, which was about 10 minutes from anna and jeremy's place, to set up for the day of hopeful success. well, it was father's day and sweltering. success was not in the stars for us, only sweat and to-go bloody mary's. we had fun. holly rules! it wasn't that bad because i got to see these folks:
• taryn from mymy who is awesome!
• gordana from qylaar who asked me to make a dwarf bonnet for one of her blythe dolls. precious!
• valerie from dear birthday and a fellow bonnet maker!
• erin from sodafine who i finally and sweetly got to meet!
• jami from jetsetter who is an amazing friend with cute! cute! cute! pantyfied cycling caps!!!
• the kids from paper napkin gerik, annette, and mayu!

at the end of the event, we were pleased. we packed up and that was that! after the renegade craft fair was no more, we had another amazing night that included $3 all-you-can-eat bbq, watching paper napkin play one song, and hanging out with my friends from R.E.load. it was also nice catching up with my friends sarah, anna, and jeremy who i hadn't seen in forever. and of course, nate was there to make everything wonderful!
here's some of the loot i got!

huge hearts are drawn around the gals from art star for hauling me to and from the big appple, holly from miss hawklet for the opportunity to share this event with, jami from jetsetter for going out of her way, carrie from fabric horse for letting me wear one of her totally rad utility belts, anna and jeremy for being such lovely hosts, the ladies over at the renegade craft fair for making another magical handmade event a success, and to all of you who stopped by to say hello!!! thank you all!!!
